Dustin takes a look at the just released trailer for “Grown Ups 2” as well as at the red-band trailer for “This is the End” and evaluates just how one movie could get it so right, while the other is “Grown Ups 2.”

The trailer to a movie is easily the most important part of marketing. It has 2-3 minutes to sell you on if you should shell out the seemingly $50 for the ticket, popcorn and drink at the movie theater. I have seen many a movie based solely on their badass trailers and I’ve skipped quite a few when the trailer is less than satisfactory.

This week, I’ve been treated to both ends of the trailer spectrum: a movie I can’t wait to see, and one that is guaranteed to make me hate whoever wants me to go see it with them.

On the surface, “This is the End” and “Grown Ups 2” couldn’t be more different, but before we get into what makes “The End” great and “Grown Ups 2” look like a shit show, let’s look at the similarities:

• Both feature large ensemble casts like “the Expendables” of comedy.
• Both have a lead actress playing against normal type (Emma Watson in “The End” and Salma Hayek in “Grown Ups 2.”
• Both are likely to be blockbusters.

I’m sure there’s more, but I just really want to get to the trailers.

THIS IS THE END:

Noteworthy Thoughts:

• The Rogen/Franco connection is possibly the best comedy duo today
• Michael Cera may finally break out of typecasting by playing himself
• Craig Robinson, Danny McBride and Jay Baruchel are a “Voltron” of 6th-Man supporting actors
• Rhianna falls into a crater
• Somehow, hearing crude things is funnier than seeing crude things
• I don’t know how aliens and gigantic earthquakes and dinosaurs are going to all come up, but I’m completely sold
• Emma Watson is 10x hotter with her accent
• The cameos could possibly steal the movie
• Red Band trailers are so much better than theatrical
• Jonah Hill doesn’t get much to do in the trailer, meaning he could possibly own this movie more than everyone else
• Having everybody play themselves makes it 10x better
• This will be the funniest movie of the summer

GROWN UPS 2: 

Noteworthy Thoughts:

• Somehow, they couldn’t get Rob Schneider
• Has anyone looked into if Kevin James had Chris Farley murdered so he could take his place? I mean, I’m not going to start that rumor, but I won’t shoot it down if it comes to me.
• I hope they paid you a fortune Chris Rock, I really really hope it was worth it.
• Shaq is in this?
• Holy shit, so’s “Twilight” werewolf, surprisingly, he’s got at least portions of a shirt on
• All of “The Lonely Island” are in what is sure to be the funniest scene of the movie because of their appearance.
• Rumor has it, Stone Cold Steve Austin is in this, but I don’t see him. Not looking promising
• A deer pisses on Adam Sandler’s face
• Seriously, Rob Schneider was too busy for this
• Even Rob Schneider didn’t want to be a part of this
• The cameos will provide the only humor in the movie
• It will gross twice what “This is the End” will and that is what’s wrong with society
• How did Adam Sandler land Salma Hayek? (Possibly my biggest complaint with the first one, possibly)
• If Steve Buscemi doesn’t pop up, there’s a 0% chance I ever see it. (If he does, maybe there’s a 5% chance)

Seeing both ensembles is a good look at the past, present and future of comedy in Hollywood. Sandler, Rock and Spade have all been prominent since the early 90’s and have tried to extend their careers and success by duplicating the same bro-y vibe that Rogen, Franco, McBride and co. have all perfected.

With “This is the End” opening June 12, and “Grown Ups 2” not debuting until over a full month later, July 16, it’s possible audiences could pass on “Grown Ups” and recognize it as another round of Sandler and his posse yukking it up on a overpaid summer vacation, but much like the stars of “Grown Ups,” audiences just want to try and pretend they’re still young and hip.
