First Look:Mortal Kombat X

By Dustin Brewer

Earlier today gaming fans were treated to the first trailer for the next installment in the legendary “Mortal Kombat” series. The first for the new gen Xbox One and PS4.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

For most fighting game franchises, this seems to be their bread and butter.

Year after year fans are given installment after installment of more or less the same old same old with a few new bells and whistles and some new packaging as developers call it a day.

The “Mortal Kombat” series has fallen into that more and more with the past few installments but they’ve clearly tried to break out of that rut with not only their first title for the Xbox One and the PS4, but the first fighting game for the next gen consoles, which means it gets the chance to set the bar for every title to come.

The trailer shows series stalwarts Sub-Zero and Scorpion facing off in the woods and while it starts similar to almost every game that’s come before it, it isn’t long before we begin getting glimpses at what the game will have to offer.

First off, the fighting style seems to be more focused on realistic grappling/brawling as Sub-Zero and Scorpion trade blows more common in a street fight than the usually martial arts styles in “Mortal Kombat.”

Another new development, the environments appear to be fully integrable into the fights as we see Sub-Zero break off a tree branch and then uses his freezing abilities to turn it into ice and break it over Scorpion’s face. Yes, it’s as rad as that sounds.

To wrap it all up, Scorpion finally shows his dominance and pummels Sub-Zero into submission. We hear the famous, “Finish him” and Scorpion proceeds to tear Sub-Zero’s head off with his famous wrist spear and we cut to black with his catch phrase, “Get over here!”

For a first look at the game, it has definitely done its’ job of piquing interest as fans will surely be on the lookout for more news on the game as it’s made available.

For now all we know is that it is expected to hit Xbox One, PS4 and PC sometime in 2015. Stay tuned to HefferBrew for more details as we get them
