Earlier this summer as the 2012 Olympics were upon us, basketball fans found themselves engaging in the argument of who would win, the 2012 Olympic roster or the 1992 Dream Team?
In yet another new 2K Sports video featuring the upcoming NBA 2K13, they show us what could have been had these two teams been able to play and settle the debate.
It started when Kobe Bryant declared he thought his guys could beat Jordan’s Dream Team despite their lack of size. Analysts and even members of the ’92 team were quick to shoot down Kobe’s bold claim but the debate never seemed to go away due to this years’ team winning the gold medal in dominating fashion.
If 2K13 is the closest we ever get to seeing this game unfold, they clearly wanted to make sure it was as accurate as possible. The video is gorgeous and showcases all of the members of both teams as they fight for every point. Jordan, Johnson, Barkley, Malone, Stockton and Pippen all match up with the likes of Kobe, LeBron, Durant, Love, Westbrook, Paul and Chandler and no clear advantage is ever seen. Kobe one on one with Jordan is the type of things sports and video game fans have been waiting to see, Durant and Bird matchup in what would be the greatest 3-point shootout ever and LeBron and Magic both do their job to not only facilitate the offense but dominate when they see fit.
Of course in the end, with the ’92 team down by 1 point with 10 seconds left, Jordan has the ball, he clears the rest of his team out and is met by one man- Kobe Bryant. As the clock winds down, Jordan makes his move and starts to pull up for the game winner, Kobe’s with him step for step and as Jordan releases… the video ends. Meaning, we’ll all have to wait until Oct. 2nd when we can settle the debate once and for all ourselves.
NBA2K13 releases October 2 in the U.S. and October 3 worldwide.
